Supporting Your Body’s Natural Detoxification
When we hear the word detox, we often think of a short-term cleanse, restrictive diet or collection of supplements. But detoxification isn’t something we suddenly switch on — your body is detoxifying every day.
The liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, lungs and skin continually work together to process and eliminate metabolic waste and compounds we encounter through food, medications, alcohol, our environment and normal
cellular activity.
At Core Naturopathics, our approach isn’t about trying to make the body “detox harder.” It is about understanding what may be placing pressure on these systems and whether the body has the resources it needs to process, eliminate, repair and recover effectively.
1. It Starts With Exposure
Every day the body encounters substances that need to be processed.
These can come from our environment, food and water, medications and supplements, alcohol, occupational exposures and pollutants. At the same time, our own metabolism continuously produces compounds that need to be processed and eliminated.
Infections and ongoing immune activation can add another layer of physiological demand. Following some viral illnesses, including COVID-19, persistent inflammatory and immune changes can occur in some people. Rather than describing a virus itself as a “toxin,” we consider how infection, inflammation and oxidative stress may affect the body’s overall capacity to recover and maintain normal metabolic function.
The objective isn’t to eliminate every exposure — that’s impossible. It is to reduce avoidable exposure while improving the body’s capacity to deal with what remains.
2. The Liver Is the Central Processing Hub
The liver is central to detoxification.
Through a series of biotransformation reactions, compounds are chemically modified and, where necessary, conjugated so they can ultimately be eliminated through pathways such as urine or bile.
These processes depend on adequate nutrition, functioning enzymes, antioxidant systems and cellular energy.
This is why detoxification is much more than simply “supporting the liver.”
Methylation Matters
Methylation is one of many biochemical processes involved in normal metabolism and some detoxification pathways. It also contributes to neurotransmitter and hormone metabolism, DNA regulation and other essential cellular functions.
Nutrients including folate, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, riboflavin, choline, betaine, magnesium and methionine participate in interconnected one-carbon and methylation pathways.
Rather than assuming everyone needs methyl donors, we look at the individual. More supplementation isn’t necessarily better, and methylation should be considered as part of the broader biochemical picture.
Histamine Adds Another Layer
Histamine isn’t inherently harmful. It is an important signalling molecule involved in immune responses, gastrointestinal function and the nervous system.
Problems can arise when histamine production exceeds the body’s capacity to metabolise it or when gastrointestinal, immune or enzymatic factors interfere with normal histamine handling.
Histamine metabolism also intersects with nutritional status, gut health and methylation-related pathways. This isanother reason why symptoms such as headaches, flushing, digestive disturbance, fatigue or brain fog shouldn’t
automatically be labelled as simply a “detox reaction.”
3. Detoxification Requires Cellular Energy
Every biochemical process requires energy.
Mitochondria provide much of the ATP required for cellular activity, while antioxidant and redox systems help cells manage the reactive molecules generated through normal metabolism.
This creates an important relationship:
Cellular health → energy production → biochemical processing → elimination → recovery.
If we only concentrate on pushing liver pathways without considering nutrition, mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, sleep, movement and recovery, we may be overlooking much of the physiology supporting the process.
4. Measure Before You Treat
There is no single test that tells us someone’s overall “detox capacity.” Instead, we investigate different parts of the picture.
At Core Naturopathics this may include OligoScan as a non-invasive screening tool to provide information about tissue mineral and trace-element patterns and possible heavy-metal exposure.
Depending on the individual, we may also consider conventional pathology and more specific investigations looking at areas such as:
Liver and kidney function • nutrient status • methylation-related markers • inflammation • oxidative stress • gastrointestinal health • histamine-related issues • environmental exposures.
The important principle is simple:
Don’t guess what needs supporting — investigate first.
Testing allows us to move away from the idea that everybody needs the same detox program.
5. Technology Supporting the Detoxification Environment
Our clinic technologies don’t replace the liver, kidneys, bowel or lungs, and we don’t describe them as machines that simply “remove toxins.”
Instead, we use different technologies to support aspects of the physiological environment in which normal detoxification, elimination and recovery occur.
PEMF — Cellular Function & Exchange
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy is used to support cellular function, circulation and recovery.
Within our model, PEMF sits upstream — supporting the cellular environment in which nutrients, metabolic products and normal cellular processes operate rather than directly eliminating toxins.
G-Force / Whole-Body Vibration — Movement & Circulation
Movement and muscular contraction help support venous return and lymphatic flow. Whole-body vibration provides a mechanical stimulus that activates muscles and can support peripheral circulation.
We use G-Force as part of the movement and circulation component of our detoxification and recovery strategy.
HOCATT — Heat, Sweating & Physiological Response
HOCATT combines several modalities, but heat and sweating are particularly relevant to detoxification.
Sweating is a secondary elimination pathway for water, electrolytes and small amounts of some compounds. Controlled heat exposure also creates cardiovascular and thermoregulatory responses.
We therefore see HOCATT as supporting heat adaptation, circulation, sweating and recovery, rather than simply describing it as “detoxifying the body.”
NanoVi — Cellular Repair & Oxidative-Stress Support
NanoVi occupies a different position within the Stack.
It is used as a cellular-support technology, with its proposed mechanisms centred around protein-related cellular processes and recovery from oxidative stress.
This is relevant to our model because normal detoxification depends upon functioning cells, proteins and enzymes. We therefore position NanoVi as helping support the cellular repair environment and resilience to oxidative
stress, rather than as a direct elimination therapy.
Red Light Therapy — Mitochondrial & Cellular Support
Photobiomodulation uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light that interact with cellular processes associated with mitochondrial function.
Because detoxification, repair and recovery are energy-dependent processes, we position Red Light Therapy around mitochondrial function, cellular energy and recovery.
Hyperbaric Oxygen — Oxygenation & Recovery
Hyperbaric oxygen increases the amount of dissolved oxygen available under pressure and can influence tissue oxygenation and cellular signalling.
Within our model, HBOT isn’t considered a detoxification treatment itself. Its role is supporting the oxygenation and recovery environment in which normal cellular repair processes occur.
Molecular Hydrogen — Redox & Inflammatory Balance
Molecular hydrogen is being investigated for its potential effects on oxidative stress, inflammatory signalling and cellular redox regulation.
We therefore position hydrogen as another supportive component of the recovery environment — particularly around redox and inflammatory balance — rather than claiming it directly removes toxins.
6. Nutrition, Herbs & Supplements
Technology is only one part of the picture.
Adequate protein provides amino acids used in normal conjugation pathways, while vegetables supply micronutrients and phytochemicals. Fibre supports gastrointestinal function and normal bowel elimination, and adequate hydration supports renal function.
Depending on individual requirements, nutrients that may be considered include:
B vitamins • magnesium • zinc • selenium • glycine • NAC • choline • betaine • antioxidant and glutathione-supporting nutrients
Herbal medicines may also have a role. Depending on the individual, practitioners may consider herbs traditionally or clinically used to support digestive and hepatobiliary function, such as milk thistle, globe artichoke and
turmeric.
Importantly, herbs and supplements aren’t automatically appropriate simply because something is labelled “detox.” They can interact with medications and may be unsuitable in certain medical, liver or kidney conditions.
This is why we individualise.
7. Elimination Has to Be Working
Processing a compound is only part of detoxification. Ultimately, the body needs appropriate pathways for elimination.
KIDNEYS → urine
BOWEL → stool and biliary waste
LUNGS → carbon dioxide and volatile compounds
SKIN → sweat, primarily water and electrolytes with smaller amounts of other compounds
This is why hydration, bowel regularity, fibre, movement and appropriate physical activity remain fundamental.
You can have an impressive supplement program, but the basics still matter.
Creating the Conditions for the Body to Do Its Job
