As we dive deeper into the “Surviving to Thriving” program, we now examine an exciting component to the program – neurotransmitter testing.
Neurotransmitters are the chemicals released by our brain or a nerve cell elsewhere in the body and these chemicals send a neurological message from one cell to another. They have a huge influence on our mood and how our body functions.
We run a test with a lab in the US that tests for the levels of 7 neurotransmitters in urine.
- Phenylethylalamine (PEA)
Here is an overview of the most common presentations of when these neurotransmitters are out of balance.
|NEUROTRANSMITTER||SIGNS/SYMPTOMS OF DEFICIENCY|
|Serotonin||Depression (worse in winter), anxiety, social anxiety, insomnia, poor temper, OCD tendencies, carb cravings, constipation|
|GABA||Anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, palpitations, tremors, seizures, cold/clammy hands, PMS, PMDD, dwelling over stressful things|
|Dopamine||Stress, addictive tendencies, restless legs, tremors, low libido, lacks motivation, boring dreams, forgetfulness, slow metabolism|
|Epinephrine||Hypotension, hypoglycemia, chronic stress and exhaustion, short attention span, low pain tolerance|
|Norepinephrine||Chronic stress, fatigue, pain, poor long term memory, depression, stress urinary incontinence|
|Glutamine||Lack of motivation, lethargy|
|PEA||Depression, ADD, fatigue, anxiety, low pain tolerance, poor motivation|
|NEUROTRANSMITTER||SIGNS/SYMPTOMS OF EXCESS|
|Serotonin||Confusion, agitation, muscle twitches, GI distress/nausea|
|GABA||(rare) – agitation, anxiety|
|Norepinephrine||Panic or anxiety disorder|
|Glutamine||Aggression, agitation, poor memory/focus, poor concentration|
|PEA||Insomnia, migraines, hypertension|
And once the imbalance is determined, then we dive into the treatment to correct what is deficient or in excess using innovative Naturopathic supplements sourced from overseas. Like natural antidepressants, truly addressing the underlying cause and correcting it to achieve healthy brain balance. More to come on that later!
